Variables in early algebra: exploring didactic potentials in programming activities

چکیده

Abstract In this paper we consider implications of the current world-wide inclusion computational thinking in relation to children’s development algebraic thinking. Little is known about how newly developed visual programming environments such as Scratch could enhance early algebra learning. The study based on examples activities used by mathematics teachers Sweden, teaching students aged 10–12 years during first two implementing curriculum. Informed Chevallard’s praxeology terms praxis and logos, describe, unpack, discuss expand these activities. Core issues related found three are follows: making implicit variables explicit; using a counter variable; identifying parameters specific type variable. Our findings show that, addition already identified uses algebra, bring new aspects ways treating that could, potentially, students’ understanding generalization, provided embedded an appropriate logos.

Exploring didactic models for programming

Models for teaching programming have been suggested in the literature. Interviews of teachers indicate that they normally do not relate to such models. Since referring explicitly to didactic models in teaching may improve learning, using models seems preferable. Models concerning learning and teaching are suggested in the paper.

A Didactic Interface in a Programming Tutor

This paper describes an interface that provides accessible cognitive components to programming learners during problem solving. We show how an Intelligent Tutoring System can keep the epistemological fidelity between its interface and its internal representation. For this purpose, we allow the student, throughout the interface, to select high level actions (cognitive knowledge components) and p...

Variables in Computer Algebra , Mathematics , and

We discuss the notion of variable in computer algebra, mathematics and science. Central are the questions how variables are actually used in mathematics and science, how computer algebra supports the various uses of variable, what conceptual differences exist, and what consequences follow from this for teaching, learning, and doing mathematics with a computer algebra system. 1. Introduction In ...

on the teacher-generated v.s. leaner-generated noticing-the-gap activities in language classes

abstract the purpose of this study is twofold: on the one hand, it is intended to see what kind of noticing-the –gap activity (teacher generated vs. learner generated) is more efficient in teaching l2 grammar in classroom language learning. on the other hand, it is an attempt to determine which approach of the noticing-the-gap- activity is more effective in the long- term retention of grammar...
